Malaria kills nearly half a million people per year.
Malaria is caused by a blood-borne parasite that is transferred to humans from the anopheles genus of mosquito during a mosquito bite. The parasites rapidly reproduce in the human body, initially resulting in flu-like symptoms between 7-15 days (or sometimes more) after the infective bite.
If diagnosis takes place quickly then extremely effective medicines can be prescribed that will almost always provide a complete and permanent cure within 3 days.
If there is no early diagnosis however the parasites continue reproducing, destroying red blood cells and can eventually infect and overwhelm the major organs of the body, becoming what is clinically referred to as “complicated malaria”. Treatment of complicated malaria requires Intensive Care Unit admission and mortality rates can be as high as 20%, or even as high as 50% for the over 50’s age group.
Travellers from non-malaria countries are a high risk category because of their lack of general awareness of the disease and also the frequent lack of routine testing for malaria as a potential cause of flu-like symptoms (if travellers have already returned back to their home countries by the time symptoms begin).
Travelling to a malaria-endemic area with a rapid diagnostic self-test capability should be a big part of the malaria risk reduction plan for every traveller visiting a malaria endemic region, even if only for a short time. It only takes a single bite from an infected anopheles mosquito to catch malaria.
So if you’re travelling to a location where you face a malaria risk then you need to make plans not just to reduce the risk of catching it but also to reduce the risk of an unpleasant and needless death if you do catch it.
